Incoming Pearl Rotary President Ivy Nelson presented her Club leadership team for 2007-08 at the June 26 meeting, and described plans and ideas for the coming Club year that arose at a planning retreat she convened on June 25.
Key proposals that enjoyed consensus of the planning retreat, Nelson said, and earmarked for further development included:
— Creating a Club signature fundraiser in the coming year that nets at least $40,000 for the Club’s charitable Pearl Fund
— Maintaining the pace of this year’s Club membership drive to reach and sustain a minimum membership level of 50 active members. Currently, the Club has some 44 active members on its roster.
— Developing new local, hands-on community service projects for Club member participation. There was consensus for the club to participate in the Transitions Project program involving Pearl Rotary once a quarter in preparing and distributing the evening meal to some 90 homeless and unemployed fed at the Transition Project centers in Old Town and Grand Av., Portland.
Nelson also said it was the intent of club leadership to continue and build on progress this year with World Community Service projects in four overseas countries, with the new partnership between the Club and Lincoln High School in Portland, with short-term and long-term Rotary youth exchange programs bringing foreign students to Portland and sending local area students overseas, and with tours of local businesses under the vocational education program.
This planning group will meet again in July, Nelson said, to finalize its 2007-08 recommendations for presentation to the Club’s Board and membership.
Nelson introduced the following Club members as her leadership team for 2007-08, as she and team members take up their responsibilities on July 1: President-elect Don Barney; Immediate Past President and incoming Fundraising Comm. Chair Myron Fehr; Secretary Paul Cathcart, and Treasurer Michael Steen. This group will serve with Nelson as the Club’s Executive Committee.
Other new leadership team members are: Jerry Bangsund, Pearl Fund Director; Michael Rompa, Pearl Fund Treasurer; Jan Frutiger, Club Service Director; Stan Swan, Community Service Director; David Price, Vocational Service Director; Lokahi Kakalahi, Club Registrar; Marc Dooley, Membership and Fresh Ideas Chair; David Bangsund, International Services Comm. Chair; Don Smith, Program and Youth Exchange Comms. Chair and Donna Tallman, Paul Harris Chair.
Also part of the leadership team are Club project chairs Francis Lancaster for the Bomberos Project in Guadalajara, Mexico; Nancy Parker for the Ambassadorial Scholar Project; and Wendi Hawley, Lincoln High School Project.
